Hare Fuming Over Skyrocketing Gas Prices

Congressman Phil Hare is renewing his push for a windfall profits tax on gasoline and diesel in the wake of gas prices that have soared above 4-dollars a gallon in Illinois.

The Rock Island Democrat says he's appalled that Illinoisans are being forced to grapple with record high gas prices during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The average price of gas in Illinois has climbed to $4.06 a gallon.

Hare says as working families struggle to fill up their tanks, big oil companies are resting comfortably on their record profits, and there's something wrong with that picture.

Hare wants Congress to adopt the Gas Price Spike Act of 2008, which would implement a windfall profits tax on gas and diesel. Hare says the threat of heavy taxation will send a clear signal to oil companies that price gouging will not pay.
