Moffitt Won't Support Democratic Budget Proposals, Citing New Spending

A local state lawmaker was among the Republicans in the Illinois House who rejected a budget proposal by House Democrats that would increase state spending.

Republicans say plan would drag the state further into debt, and they also cited the lack of jobs and an infrastructure package as reasons for not supporting the Democrats' plan.

State Representative Don Moffitt says he can't agree to billions of dollars in new spending when the current fiscal year budget is at least 500-million dollars in the hole, and there are nearly 2-billion dollars in unpaid bills.

The state Senate late last week voted along party lines for six budget measures, with Democrats backing the ideas and Republicans opposing them. That was after the House earlier in the week voted on two budget versions: one that would basically keep spending in line with the current fiscal year budget, and another that would add about 2-billion dollars in new spending. The Senate plan is a hybrid of the two House bills that would add around 1-point-7 billion dollars in spending next year.

Moffitt says the state cannot continue to be late paying its bills, and the budget plan the House voted on that increases spending doesn't account for increased revenue to match up with it.

Lawmakers went home for the Memorial Day holiday after the votes were taken. They'll only have a few days to resolve any differences on the budget or other issues when they return on Tuesday if they plan to end the session on time May 31st and avoid another overtime session.
