Galesburg Recognizes Memorial Day With Parade, Ceremony

A Galesburg man who continues to help out the community even well into retirement, says the message of Memorial Day is simple...freedom isn't free.

Frank Gustine was both grand marshall of this year's Memorial Day Parade in Galesburg, and guest speaker at the ceremony afterwards Monday morning on the Knox County Courthouse Lawn in front of the veterans memorial there.

Gustine, who flew over two-dozen missions for the Air Force while serving in the Korean War, says the reason for Memorial Day is to honor those who've paid the ultimate sacrifice, like a group of airmen who flew missions after him during the Korean War, but lost their lives while doing so.  "The privilege of living in a free country is due to the sacrifices of many," Gustine said, "who gave their lives so that the bright light of freedom shines with great intensity.  Let us also keep in mind that many present-day loved ones continue to step forward to keep the torch of freedom high, so that all who yearn to be free, might see the path."

Gustine also sang the first verse of the song "Taps" -- and believes it's important to hear the lyrics in the song, in order to fully understand why the song is played.
