Suspected Arson on Elm Street

A car fire early this morning in Galesburg is believed to have spread quickly and caused plenty of damage.

Galesburg Fire Department officials say crews were called to 127 Elm Street just after 1:30 a-m today when a fire that is believed to have started in what police describe as a red two-door vehicle spread to a nearby fence then to the house.

Fire officials say the fire, which mainly caused damage to the home's exterior and to the home's attic, and crews spent about two-and-a-half hours on the scene.

Galesburg police reports indicate the home's owner, 55-year old Robert Spitzig, was delivering newspapers near Kewanee at the time of the fire, and told officers he recently had a problem with a man who is suspected of robbing a local pawn shop, and who told Spitzig he'd set the man's home on fire for turning him in.

No one was injured in the fire, and police say there are no suspects in custody.
