Risinger Road Kill Bill Alive in Illinois House

Legislation sponsored in the state Senate by an area lawmaker would help with the disposal of road kill and its stink faster.

Peoria Senator Dale Risinger wants facilities operated by a municipality or county to be able to cremate deceased non-companion animals like possums and squirrels.

Risinger introduced the bill on behalf of the city of Peoria, where like many places, he says there aren't many options for disposing of animal carcasses.

Risinger says crews typially place the dead animals in dumpsters, which sometimes don't get picked up but once a week, and that's causing problems for neighborhoods.

The legislation would allow Peoria and other communities to cremate the animals, like what's done with dead cats and dogs.

The proposal unanimously passed in the Senate and is now being considered by the Illinois House.
