United Softball to State Championship Game; Time Change Has Been Made

The United softball team is closing in on a state championship.  The Red Storm beat Downs Tri-Valley 5-1 Friday morning in the Class 1-A softball semifinal round at East Peoria's EastSide Centre.

Sommer Foster led the United offensive attack with two hits and three runs batted in. Kaitlyn Winkler added two more hits for the Red Storm, which had six in the game against Downs Tri-Valley pitching.

Freshman Katie Bertlesen earned her 26th victory of the season against only one loss.  Bertlesen gave up an unearned run and two hits while walking three batters and striking out 10.

United will play either Lebanon or Cobden for the state Championship Saturday, starting at 2:30 now -- reflecting a schedule change that's been made.  Downs Tri-Valley will play in the third place game Saturday at approximately 12:30 p-m against the loser of the other semifinal game. The Lebanon/Cobden game was postponed after more than three inches of rain fell Friday in East Peoria.  Play in that game will resume at 8:30am Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Class 2-A softball semifinals are also being played Friday in East Peoria.  Stanford-Olympia takes on Morrison in Friday's first game at 4:30 p-m, follwed by Carterville and Piasa Southwestern at 7 p-m Friday.  The Class 2-A softball championship game is Saturday night at 7:00.
