Galesburg Police Investigate Walgreens Robbery

Galesburg police are investigating a report of an armed robbery early Friday morning at Walgreens on West Fremont Street.

Police reports say officers responded to the store around 12:35 a-m, and were told a white male had just fled the area on foot. A search failed to turn up the suspect.

Authorities say a woman working behind the counter in the pharmacy department told them a man approached the counter and handed her a note that told her to remain calm and get all the oxycontin the pharmacy had. The employee complied, but the suspect reportedly became upset when he couldn't see her as she went to get the pills, and he jumped over the counter. The employee claims the man approached her and pulled out a large knife, grabbed the oxycontin, jumped back over the counter and left the store.

The employee says the man got away with 160 pills of the painkiller, and she gave police the note she received from the alleged robber. Police also have a copy of the store's surveillance footage, which showed the suspect spent about two minutes in the store and kept his head down as he walked in the business and down the first aisle in an effort to avoid being identified. The night manager told police he was in the front of the store making a purchase when he saw a white male leaving the business in a hurry.

Police say the suspect in the video is an older white man wearing a hat, a grey hooded sweatshirt with a zipper, black pants and tennis shoes.

Officials say the letter is being sent to the crime lab to be tested for fingerprints. No injuries were reported.
