Galesburg Fire Hydrant Flushing Begins Tuesday

The spring season is bringing more than beautiful weather and flowers, it also means it's time for fire hydrant flushing. The Fire Department says it will work with the City of Galesburg to incorporate what they call a unidirectional method in their testing process which includes cleaning water mains through a network of flushing sequences with the water being discharged from the largest port on the hydrant.

The process, they say, will dislodge and remove mineral deposits in the water mains and will allow for a higher flow velocity, which they say can be helpful in fire-fighting. Officials say water service should not be disrupted and signs will be placed throughout each neighborhood as a reminder of the maintenance.

The flushing will begin Tuesday and will likely occur throughout the week between 8 am and 4 pm.
