Farmers Make Planting Progress

Farmers made a little more process in getting corn planted last week  After being held back from the fields, farmers advanced this week from having 6 percent of corn planted to 28 percent, in the latest USDA Crop Progress Report.

USDA Crop statistician Brad Schwab says with warm ground corn will start growing quickly. "As that ground warms up, when they do get the seed in the ground, it's going to germinate very quickly," Schwab said, "especially if this (warm weather) continues.  This week, (forecasters are) predicting some 80 degree temperatures at least in the central part of the state, which is certainly going to help things out."

Schwab says one percent of corn has emerged so far. Soybean planting has begun, but it's at less than one percent. 80 percent of oats have been planted compared to the previous week, when there was only 54 percent planted.
