City Council Approves Design of Community Center Renovations

What a majority of Galesburg City Council members say are much needed improvements to a city-owned building will finally get looked at.  On a seven-to-one vote, Galesburg aldermen Monday night approved hiring local firm Metzger-Johnson to design proposed renovations to the second floor of the Galesburg Community Center on East Simmons Street, at a cost of nearly 12-thousand dollars.

City Manager Dane Bragg says a number of changes will be looked at by the architects.  "Those renovations could include improvements to the upstairs hall and Human Services Coordinator office, meeting space, new restrooms, and kitchen area," Bragg told the council.

Fifth Ward Alderman Karen Lafferty told the Council she's been up on the second floor of the Community Center, and doesn't like it much more than anyone else.  "I was up there during the summer," Lafferty said, "and it's very, very warm up there, either for the people that have to come see the VNA or whatever they're doing up there, and for the workers alone.  So it needs to be remodeled."

Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming was the only no-vote on the proposed engineering services, and he didn't say why he voted against it.

Bragg says once the engineering and design work is completed, money will be put in a future budget to pay for the proposed renovations.
