Fire Destroys Part of a Galesburg Apartment Complex

Part of a Galesburg apartment complex has been destroyed by fire.

Galesburg Fire Captain Brad Stevenson says crews were called to 1770 Grand Avenue around quarter after three Friday afternoon, after smoke started pouring out of the first, and westernmost, apartment, owned by the Carver Community Action Agency and being used as transitional housing.

Stevenson tells WGIL fire crews got right to work, as the smoke coming out of the complex was heavy and billowing.  "They did confirm heavy black smoke coming from what looked to be the two apartments on the west end of the single-story structure," Stevenson said.  "We did have a fire that started in the single unit (Apartment 1), which was the far west end, with extension into the unit to its east, and we stopped the fire there."

Stevenson says firefighters got the blaze under control less than 20 minutes after first arriving. It shut down traffic along Grand Avenue in both directions for a time, partly because the smoke was so thick it lowered visibility.

An official cause of the fire isn't yet known; a family of five inside the first apartment got out safely.
