City Honors Local Organization

A Galesburg organization that has dealt primarily with health concerns within two population groups in the city is being honored for its work.

The Galesburg Human Relations Commission recently awarded the city's African-American-Hispanic Health Advisory Committee with its 2008 Human Relations Award.

Knox County University of Illinois Extension Unit Leader Tony Franklin is on the committee, and says his group, and its work, started because of $4,000 that was made available through the University of Illinois Medical School in Rockford to help with the dissemination of information related to health to the African American and Hispanic communities.

Franklin says he hopes the work has helped improve relationships between minorities and the health community.  He says the money has been used to hold health fairs, publish a newsletter, and has been able to provide for an individual to act as a medical translator for Hispanics who do not understand English.
