A Third Confirmed H1N1 Virus Case in Knox County
POSTED 10:29 a-m 5/14/9 Knox County health officials say a third case of the H1N1 virus is confirmed locally.

The Knox County Health Department is reminding residents to remember that the most effective way to prevent contracting the flu is through proper hygiene. "Remember the three C's to prevent the spread of germs," states Michele Fishburn, Director of Community Health Improvement for the Knox County Health Department. "Wash hands frequently to keep clean, cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, and stay home when you are sick to contain the spread of the virus."

At this time the Health Department is reporting three confirmed cases of the H1N1 influenza virus in Knox County; 621 confirmed in the State of Illinois. The three cases were not considered to be serious and individuals have been treated by their physician. Symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue.

It is expected that most people will recover without needing medical care. However, individuals who experience severe illness, or who are at high risk for flu complications, should contact their health care provider who can determine whether flu testing or treatment is needed. Be aware that if the flu becomes wide spread, there will be little need to continue testing people, so your health care provider may decide not to test for the flu virus; antiviral drugs can be given to treat those who become severely ill with influenza; but only by a doctor's prescription.
