Flooding Cancels Annual Fishing Derby in Galesburg
A popular local event held annually in the spring won't happen this year.

Flooding has resulted in the cancellation of the 22nd Annual Fishing Derby that is co-sponsored by Al's Sporting Goods and the City of Galesburg. Officials say it will not be rescheduled this year.

Fishing Derby volunteers have worked hundreds of hours preparing for the popular event and were reluctant to throw in the towel until it became apparent there was no alternative.

Derby coordinator, Sue Dutell said, "It's sad, but we have to cancel the event this year. Even with perfect weather on Saturday, the area around the lagoon cannot possibly be fit for a group that large. The amount of damage that would occur to the surrounding turf would be too great and the soggy conditions expected to remain would create problems for the young fisherman and their families. It's just not in the cards this year."

Dutell went on to say, "The Fishing Derby Committee would like to thank the many people and organizations for their efforts. We had so many sponsors to help make the day possible."

Quad-City Conservation Alliance, General Mills, Ladner Orthodontists, and the Quad City In-Fisherman Club were major sponsors and the assistance provided by the Galesburg Parks and Recreation Divisions, Galesburg Police Department and Emergency Police, the Galesburg Hospitals Ambulance Service, Galesburg Police Explorers, IL Department of Conservation and Fisheries, and the ROWVA FAA was instrumental in organizing the planning the event, according to Dutell.

"Making the cancellation even more disheartening was the fact it was to have been a special derby dedicated to the memory of Mick Tate, who passed away last year. Mother Nature just wasn't cooperative."
