Knox Health Department Staff Praised for Handling of H1N1 Flu Situation
The president of the Knox County Board of Health took time out during the monthly meeting to praise the health department's employees for how they've handled the arrival of the H1N1 virus in the county.

Board President Jeanne Harland Thursday night commended interim Board of Health Administrator Rhonda Peterson and the rest of the staff at the department for taking care of concerns and handling information professionally related to local cases of the so-called Swine flu.

Harland says things she looked at reflected very well in the media and she was proud to have the staff with a good understanding of the situation.

"I guess that's a good example of why all of that emergency preparedness training really is important. Sometimes I know it seems like, I don't know if you'd say a waste of time, but you wonder sometimes, and now I think that's a good proof that it really was a good example of why it is worthwhile to be ready for such a thing."

Peterson says it was a positive experience to have the H1N1 situation in the county in the sense that the health department could put its bioterrorism preparedness plan into action. She says the health department kept in close contact with medical providers to give them needed information as quickly as possible.

Peterson confirmed three cases of the H1N1 virus within the Knox County limits, and she says the people affected are all being treated by their physicians.
