Flooding Closes Portions of Illinois Route 9 & Illinois Route 116 in Fulton County
A heavy dose of rain last week has swelled rivers and pushed water onto roadways in the northern, central and western portions of Illinois - prompting flood warnings and road closures.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln says heavy rain on Wednesday and Friday has overwhelmed certain areas, and rainy weather this spring has put rivers and creeks across Illinois into flood stages.

Fulton and Knox counties have been hit especially hard. Flood warnings for both counties were in effect until 6:30 Sunday morning. Forecasters later allowed the warnings to expire. However, some rural roads - especially in Fulton County - remain under water.

Weather service spotters told the NWS that water and mud from farm fields are flowing over roads and small streams are pouring over banks. The weather service says law enforcement officials reported substantial flooding in Fulton County Saturday night along the Spoon River, resulting in the closures of parts of Illinois Route 9 and Illinois Route 116 due to high water. A FLOOD WARNING is in effect for the Spoon River until Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service is forecasting dry weather for several days, and meteorologists say they hope that will dry down farm fields that have not been much more than idle this spring because they're saturated.
