Gov Candidate Wants to Be More Welcoming to Big-Box Stores
One of the candidates for governor doesn't want towns and cities to keep out the "big box" stores.

State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) doesn't want local control when it comes to the possibility of "big box" stores coming to town. The real estate broker and developer, who is starting another run for governor, wants legislation to block municipalities from taking any action to specifically block retailers such as Wal-Mart, Lowe's and Target from locating there.

Brady says any community that stops these large retail stores from coming to town is hurting its own economy, because the moves prevent construction jobs, retail jobs, and another option for shopping. He says he commends Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley for reversing such a plan in Chicago, but says the threat of what he considers discrimination continues in Chicago and every other corner of the state.

Brady's legislation would bar a municipality from enacting ordinances or zoning decisions to keep mega-retailers out. Across the country, municipalities have used wage and benefit standards, store size caps, or zoning laws as they fight to keep these stores away
