| Small Fire Results In Evacuation |
UPDATED 12:25pm 5/18/09 What's being reported as a small fire in one downtown Galesburg building has resulted in surrounding buildings having to be evacuated for a short time.
Galesburg Fire department officials responded to a report of smoke coming from what they thought was the Hill Arcade Building on East Main Street around 11am Monday, next to Eichhorn Jewelers and the Orpheum Theatre offices. Galesburg Fire Battalion Chief Chip Timmons said they found a small fire at 246 East Main in the basement of the CII Embroidery Building.
Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the small fire but reports say not a lot of visible damage was seen to the building itself as the fire department is currently airing out the building. Witness say those who worked in the Hill Arcade building, the Orphuem offices, and Eichhorn Jewelers were evacuated for a short time and are currently back at work.
The response of at least three fire trucks and emergency personnel made traffic a little more congested than usual on Main Street between Kellogg and Prairie Streets for a time as well.
No injuries were immediately reported.
Employees of the CII Embroidery store told WGIL the small fire wasn't a big deal and there was more smoke than fire. They say the cause may have been a press in the basement that is used to dry shirts quickly may have been left on too long igniting a shirt.
