Truck Speed Limit Increase on Governor's Desk Again
Tractor-trailers may be driving 65 mph in January, depending on what the governor decides to do with a bill that's headed to his desk.

The Illinois Senate Monday gave final approval to a measure that allows the same speed for big rigs as it does for cars, but it had to be watered down to win passage. The bill sponsor, State Sen. John Sullivan (D-Rushville), changed his bill to exclude Cook and the collar counties (DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will) from the new, higher speed limit for 18-wheelers. He says the intent of the bill didn't change, but says he recognized that Chicago and suburban lawmakers were more comfortable with the bill if their counties were specifically named.

A uniform speed limit bill has passed before, but was vetoed by then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich. There's no word from the governor's office on how Gov. Pat Quinn leans on the measure. It passed 40-8 in the Senate.
