National Seatbelt Campaign Underway - Night Drivers Targeted
The Illinois State Police says they've been pretty serious lately about making sure motorists buckle up when they hit the road, but now they say with Memorial Day coming, they're even more serious.

State Police Master Sergeant Ron Grant says troopers along with county and local law enforcement officials are increasing patrols to catch people not buckling up from now until the end of the month -- part of a national "Click It or Ticket" effort.

Grant is assigned to the State Police District based in Macomb which covers Warren and other area counties, and says his district has seen more than its fair share of fatal traffic accidents due to no seat belt usage in recent years.

"From 2006 to 2008 in the Illinois State Police District 14 28 lives were lost, which could have been saved if seatbelts were worn at the time of the crashes. Additionally, 21 of these deaths resulted from the victims being ejected from the vehicle due to not wearing seatbelts."

Grant says national statistics indicate that motorists are more likely to not use seat belts between six p-m and six a-m, so an extra emphasis is being placed this season on nighttime patrols.

Grant says troopers won't issue written warnings for not wearing a seat belt; he says they will write tickets.
