Official: Most of Illinois' Oil Doesn't Come from Mideast
Officials with a Canadian oil group stopped in Springfield this week in an effort to educate Illinoisans about how much Canadian crude oil they actually use. Oil Sands Development Group President Don Thompson says a recent survey shows that only 11 percent of Illinoisans know that most of their oil comes from north of the border.

Thompson says Canada provides more than 1 million gallons of crude oil per day more than the closest competitor. He says it's safer to provide oil by an underground pipeline than it is by a tanker in the Gulf of Mexico. He cites Hurricane Katrina in 2005 as an example, when it was nearly impossible for oil tankers to get to the Gulf Coast to deliver oil.

Thompson also advocates an extension of a couple of oil pipelines. One, which currently stops in Northern Illinois, would extend through Central Illinois and stop at a refinery in Patoka, which is due south of Vandalia. The other project would expand a pipeline that spans across Missouri and stops at a refinery in Wood River, just north of East St. Louis. That would also end up in Patoka.

These projects, Thompson says, would require several billion dollars and could create tens of thousands of jobs.
