Union: State Workers May Not Want to Make Too Many Budget Concessions
With the state facing a projected deficit of $11.5 billion, state workers will be asked to chip in, but they're not eager to make concessions.

Henry Bayer, president of AFSCME Council 31, which represents the bulk of the state government workforce, says his members are not overpaid, "given the responsibilities they have, the level of education that's required for their jobs, or the level, in some cases, of the danger that they confront every day on their job," Bayer said.

The governor has called for furlough days for state workers -- unpaid days off. Bayer says in 2001, Gov. George Ryan suggested the same thing, but the union found ways to save the state the same dollar amount without furloughs. Bayer says the state is already spending too much on overtime by having too few staffers.
