Gas Prices In Illinois On The Rise
Gas prices in the state have been creeping up. Now we know how much.

Over the last month, the increase in Illinois is 29 cents to a statewide average to $2.40 according to a monthly survey published by the Triple-A Chicago Motor Club.

It's a big monthly jump, says Nicole Niemi, a spokesman for Triple-A who notes that gasoline last year at this time averaged $3.89. Niemi says a higher worldwide demand is just one of the reasons for the price jump.

"There's been increased demand in the United States with the warmer weather and longer daylight hours, people are driving more. There's also been increased demand around the world - China and India - those types of countries. All of that is causiing crude oil prices to increase."

Triple-A says nearly 1.8 million people in the state will take to the roads and travel more than 50 miles from home over the holiday weekend. 1.5 million of those traveling will go by car.

The average price of a gallon of fuel in the Galesburg area is around $2.54 -- a significant increase in just the last week.
