| Ethics Reform Vote Postponed |
Illinois Senate Republicans aren't happy with Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago), who postponed voting on several ethics measures that were supposed to be discussed Friday. Earlier, Cullerton said he postponed a vote on the measures so lawmakers could have more time to work with the Illinois Reform Commission headed by former federal prosecutor Patrick Collins.
House Minority Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) says this shows that Democrats are interested in "nibbling" at the problem of corruption, instead of "going for the whole meal." He says provisions such as recalling public officials, transparency, redistricting and a litany of other topics likely won't see the light of day this legislative session.
Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) says Democrats would probably like to push through a watered-down ethics reform package, devoid of campaign contribution caps and redistricting, but she says that likely won't happen because there's too much public pressure to do what she calls "the right thing."
Radogno, like Cross, is outraged that an ethics package won't be voted on until late next week. She says it could be an attempt by the majority party to kill important ethics legislation. While she agrees that lawmakers moved swiftly to remove former Gov. Rod Blagojevich from office, she says they might not be so quick to change the statutory status quo, especially if they have a vested interest or make money from the current system.
