| Orpheum Wants Federal Stimulus Dollars |
The Orpheum Theatre is applying for federal stimulus money in hopes it can make a number of much needed improvements.
Theatre president Kate Francis told the Knox County Civic Center Authority Board this week it is applying for federal money through the "Save America's Treasures" grant program -- the deadline for which was Friday -- where the theatre could apply for a half-million dollars in funding for things like fixing a boiler that has not passed inspection, remodeling inside the building, and façade renovation outside among other things.
The catch is, Francis says, she has to look for local matching funds, and wants to try asking the Galesburg City Council for funds from the Tax Increment Financing District covering the area of the Orpheum for starters.
"I would recommend we go to them for a hundred thousand - fifty thousand from the county and fifty thousand from the downtown council, fifty thousand from Ameren IP, since this is an energy efficency heating and cooling issue, and a significant contribution from the Krieske Foundation who are particularly committed to capital projects - and fifty thousand dollars from private contibutions."
Francis says she hopes the City Council will want to release some of that TIF money since they did something similar in recent history for the Discovery Depot Children's Museum when they built an outdoor play area.
It's not clear what kind of chance the Orpheum has of getting the stimulus money, but she says she should find something out in the fall. |
