Carl Sandburg College Gives Awards During Commencement Ceremony
The Carl Sandburg College Foundation honored the recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus Award, Joshua D. Gibb, and the Pacesetter Award, John Devine, during the recent commencement ceremony.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award, given each year, recognizes a successful Carl Sandburg College graduate. This year's award went to Joshua D. Gibb, executive director for the Galesburg Community Foundation. Gibb received his Associate in Science degree from CSC in 2000 and was elected as Student Trustee to represent the student body on the Board of Trustees while also serving on the Student Government Association. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in political science at Western Illinois University.

Gibb is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Association of Strategic Planning, and the Council on Foundations. Close to $250,000 has been distributed to the non-profit sector in Galesburg during his time with the Galesburg Community Foundation. Gibb is also a member of the Galesburg Noon Lions. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce as well as the Board of Directors for Leadership Greater Galesburg.

The Knox County Farm Bureau recognized Gibb for his service to their organization and he also received honor from the Knox Ag Roundtable for service to Knox County agriculture. Gibb is also very active in his church and serves as the Church Treasurer.

In 2005, Gibb graduated from Leadership Greater Galesburg and in 2008 he completed the Agricultural Leaders of Tomorrow program. Gibb is currently studying to achieve a Certificate in Strategic Management.

The Pacesetter Award is being awarded for the first time by the CSC Foundation and recognizes the accomplishments of Illinois' more recent community college graduates. John Devine is being recognized posthumously for his contribution to the Carl Sandburg College community through his dedication to advocate for people with disabilities.

Devine was a student who was blind that decided to return to school at age 56 to reach his goal of empowering those with disabilities in the areas of goal-building, self esteem, and technology awareness. He maintained a 3.88 grade point average and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and received multiple scholarships. Devine showed exceptional writing skills and CSC instructors use his writing samples as reference in their class instruction. He graduated from CSC in May, 2007, with an Associate in Arts degree and had begun studies toward a Bachelor’s degree at Knox College.

While at CSC, Devine tutored students in Earth science, gave a memorable speech on Braille, and spent time in the ceramics studio on the potter's wheel. He served as Vice-President on the Board of Directors for the Stone-Hayes Center for Independent Living and was a speaker and panelist in the community. Devine passed away on Dec. 1, 2008.
