Community Health Clinics Get Stimulus Funding, Including Centers in Oquawka and Peoria
Community health centers across the state are getting millions in federal grants.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes money for health centers that treat patients lacking insurance for discount prices. The money will go toward hiring nurses and doctors, allowing the centers to see more patients.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says the need is growing. Illinois has about 1.8 million people without health insurance, a number that rises as people lose their jobs.

Illinois clinics are getting $20 million now -- $15.1 million for 36 existing clinics, and $1.3 million each for four new clinics: one in Carbondale, two in Chicago and one in Waukegan.

These grants are from $500 million being distributed nationally. The act authorized $2 billion, so $1.5 billion has yet to be allocated.
