Government Accountability Online Close to Reality
People who want government to be more open are anticipating Gov. Pat Quinn's signature to a bill putting most state information online. The "accountability portal" would be a web site that contains information on state salaries, state contracts, state spending, and more.

State Rep. Mike Tryon (R-Crystal Lake), whose previous efforts to create this portal have failed to make much progress, says despite what you may think, only about 20 percent of requests for public information come from reporters. He believes the web site will be very useful to businesses which bid on state contracts and lose.

At a statehouse news conference, Tryon and State Sen. Pam Althoff (R-McHenry) praised Quinn and Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) for helping the bill along.

H.B. 35 awaits the governor's action.
