The Galesburg-based group "Joyful Noyz" sang at Monday night's Memorial Day service at the Lincoln Park Veterans Memorial.

Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza read from prepared remarks at the ceremony, saying this time of year is always difficult for him for a number of reasons, but still extremely important.

"Memorial Day is a day of opportunity to give thanks for all that we are blessed with. It should also be a day that we rededicate ourselves to our country and to America's living veterans and their families in memory of the sacrifices that they and others have made."

Garza made special recognition of the family of Carl Bernhart. Garza served in the Marines with Bernhart, and says he passed away recently from Lou Gehrig's Disease.
