Illinois Reports First Death Attributed to H1N1 Virus
Illinois has recorded its first death related to H1N1 influenza, commonly referred to as the Swine Flu.

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Monday the victim is from the Chicago area, where most of the state's H1N1 cases have been reported.

IDPH Director Dr. Damon Arnold says in addition to having the virus, the individual who died had other underlying medical conditions. He says due to the family's wishes for privacy, the agency will not release any other information about the case.

Arnold says health officials know the virus is still circulating in the state and he's reminding residents, especially people with chronic medical conditions, to continue taking steps to keep from getting the flu.

The steps include the following three C's:

*Clean - properly wash your hands frequently
*Cover - cover your cough and sneeze
*Contain - contain your germs by staying home if you are sick

Arnold advises anyone who have flu symptoms and an underlying health condition to contact a health care professional about treatment. He says the elderly and children younger than 5-years of age with flu like symptoms should contact their physician.

The state has reported 896 cases of the H1N1 virus to date. Chicago has 392 and Cook County 276 cases. There have been three confirmed cases of the virus in Knox County. Local health officials said the three people who became ill were doing well and were treated by their physicians.
