City Council Makes "Neighborhood Challenge Grants" Available
The City of Galesburg is poised to provide some financial incentive to residents and groups who want to improve their neighborhoods.

While already included in the City Budget for the current fiscal year, the Galesburg City Council recently okayed $10,000 being set aside for what are being called Neighborhood Challenge Grants.

Galesburg City Manager Dane Bragg says there are several specific areas related to neighborhood improvement that would be funded with the money. "One would be Neighborhood Watch activities," Bragg said. "That would be including activities including National Night Out, as well as a couple of educational seminars we have planned later in the summer. We have about $2,000 for the block party table and chair rental...we switched to this system for the (National Night Out) block parties last year."

Bragg says the city also hopes to send some city and Neighborhood Watch officials to a annual conference regional conference being held this year in Decatur. He says that would leave the remaining $6,000 for grants, which could help pay for things ranging from block parties to cleanup and tree-planting.
