Illinois House Speaker's Proposed "Fumigation Bill" Fails - For Now
No mass state government firings, yet.

House Speaker Michael Madigan's "fumigation bill" had no problem passing the House a couple of weeks ago, but it faced a completely different fate in the Senate: it didn't pass. Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago), who sponsored the measure, pulled it from the record during the debate because it wasn't going to be resolved by midnight.

But both Democrats and Republicans who debated the bill, which would fire 750 state employees appointed during the Ryan and Blagojevich administrations, seemed to be against it for various reasons. Cullerton said he pulled the bill because he didn't think enough Senators understood what it did, and wanted to take time to fully explain it to his members with questions before calling it for a vote again.

Senate Bill 1333, introduced as a House bill by Speaker Madigan, originally called for 3,000 firings, but was scaled back to only apply to double exempt employees.
