YMCA Makes Case to City Council for Parking Lot
The Galesburg City Council will consider in two weeks the Knox County YMCA's plans for a proposed expansion of their property in order to accommodate their members.

Aldermen heard about the proposed plan to add a 178-space parking lot to the Y's Carl Sandburg Drive property that is expected to cost them over $500,000.

YMCA Executive Director Linus Vanderwyst says the community support of the Y has made a parking lot more than a little necessary. "The community supported the capital campaign of $1.3 million to add a new wellness center. And with that, our membership grew from over 3,500 to 5,400 members," Vanderwyst said. "And, there are weeknights and Saturdays with youth sports activities and swim meets were we cannot accommodate all the cars. We're looking to continue to grow and expand in the future. This parking lot will address current needs and future growth."

Because the parking lot, on property the Y owns, is in the Sandburg Mall Comprehensive Planned Development District, the project requires city council approval because it can go forward. It was discussed on first reading Monday night.
