Knox County Circuit Court Judge Stephen Mathers administered the oath of office to Sal Garza Monday night, not long after Gary Smith gave his farewell and left City Hall. A capacity crowd in council chambers erupted in applause once the oath was done.

Garza says while a lot has been done to improve the city already, there are challenges coming up that will need to be addressed head-on.

"My hope is, my determination, is that we celebrate the rich history that we have in Galesburg, but that we shift from dwelling on the negative past," Garza said. "The future is what the promise is for this community."

Garza says he wants to move the community forward, working with the city council and administration, and, as he put it, other groups that believe in the community.
