Another Potential Republican Candidate for Governor
The Republican primary for governor in 2010 could be as crowded as the 2006 field. DuPage County Board President Bob Schillerstrom is forming an exploratory committee to test the political waters. That means he's trying to find out if he has enough support, and can tap into enough money, to make a worthwhile run. He joins State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) in the quest for the governor's office. Another Republican thinking about running is State Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine). He says he knows the state's in a mess, and he wants to be part of the team that fixes that mess.

Both Schillerstrom and Murphy know a crowded Republican field could backfire, as it did in 2006 when Judy Barr Topinka emerged the winner, but bloodied from the campaign and with fewer dollars than she needed to take on the well-funded incumbent Rod Blagojevich. Schillerstrom and Murphy say no matter what, they’ll all stand behind the winner.

2006 candidate Ron Gidwitz hasn't ruled out a run for governor. Doug Whitley, head of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, has decided not to run.
