FIRST ON WGIL: Knox County Confirms Swine Flu Case; State Numbers Skyrocket
POSTED 11:10 am 5/5/09, UPDATED 11:42am 5/6/09 Knox County is among eleven counties in Illinois and the City of Chicago with a confirmed case of the H1N1 influenza virus.

Michelle Fishburn, Director of Community Health Improvement for the Knox County Health Department, won't say say where the person lives in the county or if it's a man or woman, but she doesn't believe it's a serious case.

Fishburn tells WGIL residents shouldn't panic. "We received confirmation quite late (Monday) that we did have one case in Knox County, and appropriate precautions have been taken," Fishburn said. "The individual was under the care of a physician, and is doing fine."

As of Wednesday, state officials now say there are 225 confirmed and 20 "probable" cases of swine flu across the state.

The Illinois Department of Public Health continues to forecast that occurrence of the Swine Flu virus in Illinois will be low.

Officials say it's important to remember practical measures to avoid the spread of the flu like frequent hand-washing, covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and staying home when you're sick to help contain the spread of the virus.
