City Recognizes Old Main Restoration Work
A project that the president of Knox College admits the college wasn't exactly planning to do has earned it special recognition from the City of Galesburg.

The City's Landmark Commission recently gave Roger Taylor and the college a Historic Preservation award for the work done to re-roof Old Main.

Taylor says it wasn't work that was even on Knox's back burner until Mother Nature intervened.

"We had what you call some straight-line winds that caused us to need to do the work," Taylor said. "It was a wonderful job. The craftsmen just did a great job. They've done a lot of roofs, but not many on a building that's been in use since 1856."

Taylor was referring to the straight-line wind damage in August of 2007 that caused a lot of damage in the Galesburg area. It also tore apart portions of the Old Main roof.

Landmark Commission officials say the roof was restored to its original copper.

The Old Main project was one of two institution-based projects honored this year -- the other was the lighting of the steeple at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
