Church Restoration Project Results in Landmark Award
A Galesburg church is the recipient of a City of Galesburg award for work that started out simple enough, but eventually got a little more complicated.

The City's Landmark Commission recently awarded Corpus Christi Catholic Church a Historic Preservation Award for work the church did to light and partially restore the church's steeple last year.

Corpus Christi pastor Fr. Bill Miller says the church has been part of Galesburg for more than 125 years, and keeping the building in tact has become important.

"Anyone who's been involved in trying to keep a beautiful old building going knows that it takes a lot of work and support," Miller said. "I've been blessed to be part of a faith community that is committed to this house of worship."

The church last year determined that before it could light the steeple, some other structural and lightning damage in that area had to be fixed, which culminated last November with the painting and re-placing of a cross on top of the steeple.

Miller says it's comforting to know that the community appreciates the work as much as the parish does.
