Illinois Marks Osteoporosis Day
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Public health officials in Illinois are urging residents to learn about the risks of osteoporosis and ways to prevent and treat the disease.

Monday was Osteoporosis Day in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Public Health says osteoporosis is a "serious disease" that happens when the body loses more bone mass than it replaces. This causes bones to become thin and brittle and easily break. The department says osteoporosis can be called a "silent disease" because there are no symptoms.

Illinois health officials say residents can reduce their risks of developing osteoporosis by getting enough calcium and vitamin D, exercising and not smoking and not drinking excessively. Residents also should have bone density tests and talk to their health care provider.
