Effort to Save Firefighter Fund From Sweeps
What has become a familiar way to add money to the state's general revenue funds the last couple years of the ongoing state budget crisis wouldn't happen this time in one way, according to a local lawmaker sponsoring legislation to that end.

State Representative Don Moffitt says House Bill 5412 essentially blocks the sweeping of the state's Fire Prevention Fund from being spent.

Moffitt says it was necessary to protect the fund in some way.

"This is a fund that had been swept in the past," Moffitt said. "It's generated through the Fire Prevention Fund when people pay for their insurance, and it's supposed to go for fire prevention. This will make sure that money is there for training purposes."

The Gilson Republican says the measure requires two-and-a-half percent of the money deposited into that fund to go to the Illinois Fire Service Institute, to bankroll their Cornerstone Training Program.

Moffitt says training is provided through the University of Illinois Fire Institute, many times, to local fire departments, and that over 13,000 firefighters were trained under the program last year.

The measure, after unanimously passing the House in February, also passed unanimously in the Senate within the last week, and is now on the Governor's Desk.
