Quinn Vetoes Bill Restricting Scholarships
CHICAGO (AP) -- Gov. Pat Quinn wants lawmakers to completely abolish a legislative scholarship program, so he has vetoed a measure that only would have restricted it.

Quinn issued the veto Tuesday because he says lawmakers didn't go far enough.

The program allows lawmakers to give free tuition to their constituents that's equal to two, four-year scholarships at Illinois universities.

The governor's office says cash-strapped universities absorbed $13.5 million in scholarship costs last fiscal year.

He says lawmakers from both parties have abused the scholarship program, and he says it needs to end because the state doesn't have enough money to fully fund other scholarships.

He is calling on the Illinois Senate to pass a House Bill that would end the scholarship program.
