First Customer for New City of Galesburg Grant
It didn't take long after the Galesburg City Council approved a new grant program before it got its first customer.

Aldermen recently approved the implementation of what the city calls the Galesburg Employer Training Program -- where existing businesses can apply for grants to train current employees or hire new ones and train them.

City Manager Dane Bragg says it provides money that could be critically important to the businesses that apply.

"The city would provide up to 50% of a total training cost package, which could not exceed $50,000 in contribution by the city," Bragg said. "That's pro-rated out by up to $500 per existing job that's retained, or up to $1,000 per new job that's created here within the corporate limits."

The first applicant, the city says, is Peoria-based United Facilities, who has applied for a $50,000 grant to train over 100 of their employees and hire up to 20 more over a two year period at their Galesburg plant. They plan to use that money toward training on a new warehouse management system.

The company says in a statement it also wants to do a "system-wide upgrade," and will do that through building improvements, machinery, and other means -- part of a $3 million investment planned in the Galesburg plant.

The City Council is to vote on awarding the grant Monday night.
