Quinn Comments on U of I President Selection
Gov. Pat Quinn recognizes the difficulty facing the new president of the University of Illinois.

University of Connecticut President Michael J. Hogan will take over at Illinois on July 1, and the governor says he understands the challenge facing the new president. "It's not an easy job. It's no different than being governor of Illinois," Quinn said Sunday in Chicago . "I inherited a very large budget deficit of billions and billions of dollars, but we don't just throw up our hands and give up."

The university's $4.7 billion budget is under strain, primarily because state owes the U. of I. about $375 million. The university forced furlough days on 11,000 workers to save $17 million.

Quinn says he does not have a problem with the salary for the new president, $615,000 a year, compared to the $450,000 paid to current interim president Stanley O. Ikenberry (whose salary will be pro-rated since his term as interim president will be less than a year) and his predecessor B. Joseph White. "I think he will pay great dividends for the people of Illinois for years to come," the governor said.

The Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet Thursday in Chicago to officially hire Hogan.
