Pilot Program to Help Provide Colorectal Cancer Treatments
Colorectal cancer is the No. 2 cancer killer in the nation, but it doesn't have to be, says Dr. Damon Arnold, director of the Illinois Public Health Department. Arnold says colorectal cancer can be treated in most cases if it is detected early.

The department is presenting the Southern Illinois School of Medicine in Springfield with a $300,000 grant to begin a new pilot program in the region. The Central Illinois Cancer Screening Program will provide education and preventative testing to people ages 50-64 who are uninsured or underinsured.

About $57,000 of the grant came from the Vince Demuzio Memorial Colon Cancer Fund. Demuzio was an Illinois state senator who died from colorectal cancer in 2004. His wife Deanna replaced him in the Senate and says she is happy to be a part of the new program. Deanna Demuzio says Vince could still be here today if they had known to get tested.

The program will cover 17 counties: Bond, Cass, Christian, DeWitt, Effingham, Fayette, Greene, Jersey, Logan, Macoupin, Mason, Menard, Montgomery, Morgan, Sangamon, Scott, and Shelby. It is ready to provide more than 150 colonoscopies and thousands of blood tests.
