Crews Investigate Fire Behind Apartment Complex
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 5/20/10 A Galesburg fire official says there's still a lot more investigating to do following an early morning fire in the area of a local apartment facility.

Galesburg Fire Investigator Mike Whitson says firefighters were called to the Bell Isle Apartments near Dayton and West Streets around 2am Thursday for a fire in the carport area.

Whitson says the fire is believed to have started in the southernmost section of the carport, and was fanned quickly by a northwest wind that was blowing upon the firefighters' arrival.

He says upwards of 20 cars either inside the carport or near it were destroyed or damaged due to the fire, which also caused damage to a couple of trees and the carport itself.

The fire was out in less than a half-hour. Whitson says the cause is still unknown at this time, and that a pretty extensive investigation is ongoing.

Whitson was quick to point out that this fire is not connected to the one at the former Butler Manufacturing complex earlier this month and destroyed several vehicles owned by a local landscaping business.
