Gas Prices Up a Little
The price of gasoline over the last month is up, but not by much.

The statewide average for April was $3. For May it's $3.05, according to the monthly survey by the AAA Chicago Motor Club.

This is a time of year when the price usually climbs more sharply than that. What has happened? "What we've seen in May is it rose through the very beginning of May, but then dropped back down, and it's continuing to drop, which is very rare for this time of year,” said AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher.

The drop is because the price of crude oil, high since October, has stabilized in the $70 a barrel vicinity, which is not a low price but seems to be a fair price.

Gas last year at this time in Illinois was $2.40, so we're paying quite a bit more than a year ago, but that isn't deterring people from Memorial Day weekend travel. AAA estimates 1.74 million Illinois residents will travel more than 50 miles from home over the holiday weekend, an 8.3 percent increase over 2009. 1 1/2 million of those folks will be driving.
