Local Guard Soldiers Deploy This Weekend
The public will have several chances over the next couple of days to thank and bid farewell to our local heroes, as they go off on a mission their leaders call a "unique opportunity."

The 2nd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery, with units based in Milan, Macomb, and Galesburg leave Sunday on a yearlong mission to Egypt.

The Illinois Army National Guard says the units -- the first time all three batteries Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie Batteries will be deployed as one single unit -- will be tasked with helping a multi-national force carry out the 1979 peace accord between Israel and Egypt.

A deployment ceremony will be held Saturday morning at 10 at the iWireless Center in Moline, and officials say while the public is welcome, they should arrive at least 30-minutes before the ceremony begins.

On Sunday, the troops will board buses from their respective guard armories and go to the Quad Cities Airport.

Dave Greenlief with the local Family Readiness Group and the Patriot Guard Riders says Galesburg residents that want to wish the group well can line up on North Henderson Street north of Losey no later than 6:30am Sunday.

Greenlief says the Macomb Unit will be passing through the Monmouth area around 9am. He says anyone wanting to greet them should line up at the US 34/67 junction by them.

WGIL will be at the iWireless Center in Moline Saturday to cover the deployment ceremony. Look for full coverage on AM 1400 WGIL and on wgil.com.
