Lawmakers Go Back to Work on Budget Starting Monday
The process of building a state budget for the 12 months that start July 1 resumes next week in Springfield, though whether anybody's minds have changed about anything in the last two weeks remains to be seen.

The legislature adjourned May 7 with no agreement on a spending plan. The Democrats who control the Illinois House wanted to borrow money to make a pension payment and thus close the budget gap. That vote required a supermajority to pass, and a supermajority in the House requires at least one Republican vote.

The state's budget deficit, including the amount of unpaid bills, is estimated at $13 billion. The next deadline of any kind is May 31, after which any bill taking effect immediately needs a supermajority vote.

Representatives have been advised the House will convene at 4 p.m. Monday. Senators have been advised they will convene at 4 p.m.
