Study Shows Dangerous Chemicals in Food Containers
A new study shows bisphenol A, or BPA, contaminates more food containers than previously thought. The Illinois Public Interest Research Group is releasing the "No Sliver Lining" study, which shows high levels of BPA in many canned foods.

The study tested 50 cans of food from 19 states. Of those tested, more than 90 percent had detectable levels of BPA. The synthetic hormone can cause health problems, especially in young children, like diabetes, obesity and cancer.

The study also found there is no consistency in the levels of BPA found in canned food. The lowest levels detected were around six parts per billion, while the highest levels were 1,140 parts per billion. Illinois PRIG director Brian Imus says no parent should have to worry about the chemicals that might be in the canned food they feed their children. He recommends parents buy fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables until BPA has been ban completely.

PIRG is pushing Illinois lawmakers to pass H.B., 6088, the BPA-Kids Free Act. The measure would ban the use of BPA in baby food packages. The bill is currently in the Rules Committee in the House.
