Quinn: "Less Likely" Gitmo Detainees Going to Thomson
It's looking "less likely" that terrorism detainees from Guantanamo Bay will end up at the Thomson Prison in Illinois.

That's the assessment of Gov. Pat Quinn, following a vote in the U.S. House Armed Services Committee to prohibit using money to build or modify facilities in the United States for Guantanamo detainees.

Quinn says even without Guantanamo detainees, the Federal Bureau of Prisons is in need of facilities, and can still purchase and make use of Thomson, which the state is eager to sell for a fair price.

Quinn says he expects a deal on the Thomson prison to be done this year. It has been scarcely used since the state built it in 2001, and the governor wants to see prisoners incarcerated and guards on the payroll for the financial health of Northwest Illinois.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says he still wants to see Guantanamo detainees housed there, but that fight will have to be taken up another time. In the meantime, he favors using Thomson as a regular Bureau of Prisons facility.
